Nusa Lembongan is one of 3 small islands in south-east Bali that makes up the Nusa Penida district. It is accessible by speed boat from Sanur, a ride taking about 30 minutes crossing the Badung Straits. With an area of about 8 sq km, Lembongan is surrounded by pristine clear water and white sandy beaches. The population remains small, approximately 10,000 and the majority of the people live in the 3 main villages on the island.
Lembongan is a good place to chill out after the hustle and bustle of Kuta and Seminyak. Here on this little island, life is still pretty much laid-back and quieter. We enjoyed a peaceful and idyllic couple of days on Lembongan and here are the highlights:
1. LEMBONGAN BEACH CLUB & RESORT
The speedboat stopped right in front of this resort, so you can imagine the spectacular beachfront view! The resort is practically steps away from the shoreline. The swimming pool with its deck chairs as well as the restaurant all have privy to the stunning ocean view.

Beyond the restaurant is an oasis of lush greenery cocooning the 37 private villas which make up this lovely retreat. We walked through well-maintained leafy walkways (think blooming frangipani trees, Birds of Paradise shrubs, amongst others) to our private villa.
It was love at first sight as our Balinese-inspired villa opened into our very own pool, complete with deck and sun lounger. The pool was just perfect for us to soak in – the cool water providing great relief from the hot weather! Inside the villa, we had all the usual luxe amenities like satellite tv with DVD player, complimentary wifi (which was pretty fast), tea & coffee, modern minibar and safety box.

There are 2 eateries at the resort: Kayu Manis Restaurant and Pepita Cafe & Bakery. Kayu Manis holds court facing the Indian Ocean and is the perfect spot for any meal at the resort. The menu features a variety of western and Asian dishes and Balinese specials of course.

On the other side, facing the rustic Jungut Batu Village, the casual Pepita Cafe & Bakery serves quick meals and baked snacks.
Nasi Campur is a must!
Amidst the tranquil surroundings of the resort, the Tjendana Spa is not to be missed. We just had to venture in to get some pampering. “Tjendana” is sandalwood and since centuries ago, it has been used as a natural source of protection, healing and spirituality in Hinduism and Buddhism. We gave ourselves up to the expert hands of the therapists in an hour-long Balinese massage as they kneaded natural organic materials like vanilla, frangipani and sandalwood of course, onto our skin.

Life in Lembongan
As we were already in Lembongan, we took a ride to some interesting and popular spots on the island.
2. PANORAMA POINT
The roads in Lembongan are narrow and bumpy and in many areas, winding as well. The common transportation modes here are motorbikes and pick-up trucks. We chose the latter. After climbing up the winding roads for about 10 minutes, we reached Panorama Point. No-brainer for the name as it is exactly what that is: a point where you can view the best part of the island in full panorama! This spot is a popular stop for visitors, just so that they can snap photos like these…
There are also stalls selling local souvenirs along the road leading to the point. But for me, I just preferred to sit on the steps and absorb the whole scene and atmosphere. It was also incredibly cool and windy at this spot so we didn’t mind chilling out a bit longer here.
3. DEVIL’S TEARS
Devil’s Tears is a natural landmark along the ocean line where powerful waves crash into a cave under a cliff and the resultant strong spray of water shooting up into the sky. The natural scenery here is stunning – the deep blue ocean and the thundering waves crashing onto raw jagged cliffs. We were there in the afternoon and was told that the whole scenery would be more awesome at sunset.
4. DREAM BEACH
This dreamy stretch of beach is at a cove of white sands and crystal clear water. This is also a most-sought after place to stay, looking at the resorts and chalets sprouting in this area. The photos say it all.
5. ORANGE BRIDGE
This is the bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan. You can’t miss the bright orangey-yellow of the bridge and it’s used a lot by people on motorbikes and bicycles crossing and carrying stuff between the islands.

Of course, water sports like scuba diving and snorkelling are the main attraction here – the crystal clear water is just too irresistible! You can do a day trip from Bali to Nusa Lembongan to cover these activities or if you are like us with time to spare, why not spend a couple of nights here?
